The 2017 season will run July 30 through August 20 with classical music performances, education activities, and outreach activities in the Brainerd Lakes Area. A professional roster of approximately 130 musicians are engaged, including members of the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Milwaukee Symphony, New World Symphony, and other leading ensembles from around the world. All performances are presented without tickets or fees; instead audiences are invited to contribute, as they are able. All concerts will take place at Tornstrom Auditorium (804 Oak Street, Brainerd). The season kick-off will be a community concert featuring musicians from the Lakes Area of central Minnesota on Sunday, July 30. The remaining concerts will showcase guest artists, beginning with an innovative vocal recital program curated by the Festival’s associate artistic director, baritone John Taylor Ward, on Wednesday, August 2. Ward, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and Yale, performs with opera companies and ensembles around the world; as a co-founder of LAMF, he returns to Brainerd every summer. His program titled ‘In a Distant Land’ integrates chamber music works by Robert Schumann, Charles Ives, George Crumb, and others. He told council that the DNR has requested a few changes, which have been made, and the city is presently waiting for final approval. Once received, the Planning Commission will have a public hearing for resident comments. The city completed the annual SSTS report with a total of eight septic permits being issued in 2016. It was noted that since the beginning of the year, there have been six active land use violations. Two are classified as open, two are pending, and two have been resolved. Justin informed council a petition from a resident to vacate a portion of Northland Drive. A public hearing is scheduled for May 9, 2017. No permits have issued in 2017.
